Residence Innovazione

The aim of this project is to design a new high-quality student accommodation located in front of Milan University in the Bicocca area. The building is characterized by playful facade with variations of glazed white solid elements that reference the homogeneous context designed by Vittorio Gregotti.

The glass surfaces are used to highlight from outside the functions of internal building areas. The smaller sections were implemented for rooms and residences, while bigger ones were used to identify common shared areas on different floors. The geometrical facade is “moving”  thanks to splayed and skylight windows.

This architectural project, developed on one of the few remaining vacant plots, had to consider various elements from the surrounding buildings, such as volume, alignments, and morphology. Both the architects and the client aimed to create a building with a striking design that would stand out, yet harmonize with the adjacent structures.

They opted for a monolithic, single-material building that blends seamlessly with the site's overall homogeneity. The design employs specific architectural elements and materials, such as steel and glass, to ensure formal simplicity while meeting precise spatial requirements. This approach not only ensures the building's visual impact but also maintains harmony with its context.

More about this project

"The objective of the Residenze Innovazione project is to construct a new, large residence building for students in the 'Bicocca' university district, opposite the Arcimboldi Theatre, within the student hub area.
The building envisages the construction of a functional mix of accommodation and rooms for a total of 460 beds; it consists of 15 floors above ground and 2 basement floors, for a total of 17 floors built. The beds are all located between the first and fifteenth floors of the building; the ground floor and the first basement are intended as common areas; the second basement is used for technical rooms.
Visually characterising the building is the alternation of glass facades clad in 4 different colours and white metal cladding, a geometric rigour that dialogues with the surrounding buildings."

"Based on a design by GaS Studio, Pichler realised a turnkey project for Investire SGR, which was developed through a load-bearing structure with steel columns and beams (tot. 550 tonnes) and slim floor slabs, and which forms the framework of the new student residence in Via dell'Innovazione, in Milan's Bicocca district."
